Today is expected to be the busiest day for sales at the store, and that’s why general manage Zac Langford encouraged customers to pop in on Wednesday.
Tomorrow, Good Friday, is typically the day when many observe the Catholic tradition to eat fish.
‘‘Last year the guys filleted eight tonne over this period – that’s for both wholesale and retail – and we expect to do the same this time round,’’ he said.
They open a little earlier today to cater for the extra customers, at 7am, and will open for a few hours on Saturday, 9am to 12pm.
Mr Langford said there was a steady increase in sales through Lent and Easter week, and many of his regular customers were well organised and would pop in early.
He said Atlantic salmon was typically a big seller at Easter and it was expected to be the same again, with orange roughy up on last year and flathead and trevalla always good fish to enjoy.
He suggested that if fish was bought early, it should be kept as close to zero as possible, and he used the adage: an hour out of the fridge takes a day off the life of the fish.
He had initial concerns with the weather and fish supply leading into this week, but things had turned around and although the variety was slightly down on last year the quality was good.
