The vessel will leave Kings Wharf, Launceston, today at 1.30pm.
It will return to Melbourne, where it will prepare to take on anti-whaling campaigns, should the need arise later this year.
The vessel spent longer than predicted in dry dock, with a lot of work done to its propellors and hull, as well as a slick of new paint.
Ship manager Pia Klemp said the Steve Irwin was now faster and stronger than ever before.
Due to health and safety reasons, the public was not allowed to visit and tour the vessel during its stay.
