Launceston police received more than 80 calls for help before 3pm, while the Northern State Emergency Service received more than 130 jobs in the same period and had 35 volunteers on the ground.
In addition to the widespread wind damage to houses, sheds, trees, power lines and other structures across the North causing havoc and road closures, some flash flooding occurred at Evandale.
Launceston Inspector Michael Johnston said emergency services were alerted to the tree falling on the woman about midday, in Reatta Road, Trevallyn.
The woman, 63, and her husband were in the process of clearing a number of fallen trees at their property, when the woman was hit by another falling tree.
Inspector Johnston said the woman was trapped under the tree and her husband was able to cut part of the tree away and get her out.
‘‘But unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics,’’ he said.
‘‘We have had a request from the family that their privacy be respected and to stay away from their property during this difficult time for them.’’
Inspector Johnston said he was unaware of any previous deaths from falling trees in the North.
He said the harsh weather had stretched police resources, but police had been able to cope.
Inspector Johnston urged people to ensure their safety was a priority in such conditions.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
SES Northern regional manager Mhairi Revie said 75 per cent of call-outs yesterday were for roof damage and she urged people to be patient in waiting for help.
