The girl, who was from the Sidmouth area, was hit on the West Tamar Highway, north of Collins Lane, about 6.10pm.
Police said the girl had disembarked from a bus before she was hit.
``She walked around behind the bus and commenced to walk across the highway,'' police said.
``The female was hit by a Nissan Pulsar Sedan being driven in a southerly direction by a 47-year-old male from Ravenswood.''
The girl was treated by Tasmanian Ambulance personnel at the scene and taken to the Launceston General Hospital in a serious condition.
She died in the ICU ward of the hospital late last night.
The highway between Spring Hill Road and Valley Road was closed for about five hours while Tasmania Police, crash investigation services, Tasmanian ambulance and SES investigated the scene.
Police are investigating the crash on behalf of the Coroner.
