Robert Karl Stonjek, 55, had contested the charge in the Launceston Supreme Court this week.
His defence was that the 35 video clips he possessed, including one in the most serious category of child exploitation material, were for genuine research purposes.
However, a jury today found Stonjek guilty of the offence.
Justice Robert Pearce convicted Stonjek and fined him $5000.
He also ordered Stonjek to forfeit his computer hard drive which had been used as evidence.
