Malcolm Matheson, his wife Jenny, and their daughter Alisha, 9, of Victoria, were happy to be reunited yesterday with Macy, the chihuahua-fox terrier cross.
The family, which is holidaying in Launceston, was enjoying the sights at the First Basin on Saturday when Mr Matheson saw a teenager pick up Macy and run away.
But now the little dog is back with her family.
"It's a very good ending to something that could of been very unpleasant - it could have ruined our holiday," Mr Matheson said.
Mr Matheson received a telephone call from Adam and Debbie Brenner, of Newnham, who read The Sunday Examiner's report on the incident.
Mrs Brenner said her husband had seen a dog that matched Macy's description running along Ellendale Road at Newnham.
The couple went back to the area to search for the dog.
"We had to calm her down before we could catch her - her little heart was beating fast," Mrs Brenner said.
"Our dog has been missing before, I know exactly what it feels like," she said.
"They (the Matheson family) were just so rapt when they saw her, it was beautiful."
Mr Matheson received another telephone call from someone who said they knew the names of the people that had taken Macy.
But the family members were just delighted to have Macy back, and will leave Launceston today to continue their holiday.
