On a day when six records fell at St Leonards, the Grade 8 dynamo claimed four of them.

Breaking both the meet and "all divisions" records, Wing bettered the Australian championships entry qualification mark in the long jump and missed repeating the feat in the 100 metres by 0.04 of a second and in the high jump by 1cm.

Her long jump leap of 5.34m smashed the existing record of 5.15m, her 100m time of 12.78 eclipsed the previous 12.80, her high jump of 1.61m was 5cm beyond the existing record and she added 1cm to the triple jump benchmark with 10.49m.

Wing's Riverside schoolmate Kara Smith also added 1cm to the Grade 10 girls' high jump by recording a leap of 1.58m while Bonnie Talbot, of Kings Meadows, leapt 10.51m to smash the Grade 9 triple jump record of 10.33m.

Athletics Tasmania's Brian Roe said excellent conditions produced a range of high quality performances and many personal bests with athletes keen to vie for one of the two places available in each event to join Team North for Friday week's state high schools carnival which has been revived after a hiatus of 40 years.

Roe said the girls' high jump had been the event of the last two days with the Grade 8, 9 and 10 records all being broken.

Another fine performance came from Riverside's Jackson Wood who recorded 22.85 into a slight headwind to win the Grade 10 boys' 200m - missing the under-18 nationals entry mark by a single hundredth of a second.

Launceston's two biggest schools fought it out for the overall shields with Kings Meadows edging the Grade 9-10 division by 36 points but Riverside winning Grade 7-8 by 94 to claim the combined scores victory.

Three intense days of athletic competition will wrap up on Thursday with the division three carnival featuring the smaller country high schools including Flinders Island.
