The King Island distance running star continued the front-running techniques in the 3000m at the Lausanne Diamond League event as he and Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtse established a significant lead before Ethiopia's Berihu Aregawi intervened to finish second.

The Nic Bideau-trained runner finished in a time of 7:35.06, a time which Athletics Australia described as swift on Twitter.

"He runs it the only way he knows how when asserting his presence in the lead and demanding an honest effort from his competitors,'' Athletics Australia said when describing McSweyn's performance in Lausanne.

His performances in the 3000m came days after he finished second in the mile in Oregon in a time of 3:48.40 behind Olympic champion Ingebrigtsen.

That outing came after his seventh-placed finish in the 1500m in Tokyo, in a time that would have won him a gold medal at any other Olympic Games.

The Diamond League will feature two more meetings in Paris and Brussels, before the final in Zurich, where there is expected to be strong Australian representation.

McSweyn earlier this month said he was hopeful he would be able to compete in this summer's Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals Series when his focus turns to the Australian domestic season.
