The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a flood warning for the North-East and East Coast catchments, but thunderstorms are not expected.
The rain will start on Wednesday night in the North-East - which could see up to 80 millimetres of rain - and extend down the coast throughout Thursday.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The remainder of the state, including Launceston, can expect five to 20 millimetres.
BOM meteorologist David Matthews said the rain would improve rainfall deficiencies on the East Coast, but more would be needed to break the drought.
"It's certainly going to add to rainfall that we've had in the last couple of weeks or so, where we've received about 50mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period," he said.
"I think we're going to need a few more of these events to assist those deficiencies."
The rain will be caused by a low pressure system developing in the Bass Strait.
Rainfall predictions include:
- 60-80mm for the North-East
- 30-50mm for the East Coast
- 15-30mm for central areas
- 5-20mm for the remainder of the state
