Sport is the foundation of communities and an outlet for many Tasmanians. It brings people together and in many respects, teaches life lessons that extend far beyond just the sporting arena. In a time when technology consumes the minds of children and it can be a struggle to get youth engaged in physical activity, events such as The Examiner's Coles Junior Sports Awards - recognising the achievements of talented young sportspeople across the state - are more important than ever.

Sport is more than just winning and losing. This is something most people will accept, even if it is not always promoted. Sport encourages physical activity, social interaction, friendships and develops resilience, perseverance, teamwork and other fundamental aspects of life and community universal to all involved.
There is also the undeniable benefits sport can bring in regards to promoting physical fitness and positive mental health outcomes. With Tasmania among the unhealthiest states in Australia, The Examiner remains a passionate advocate for preventative health initiatives.
That is why we invest considerably in our junior sports coverage, in a bid to highlight this importance message and promote exercise among the state's next generation. Every week we dedicate pages in our paper and resources online to champion the junior sport talent and results in our community and statewide.
In the past, the likes of Commonwealth Games Medalists Jake Birtwhistle and Ariane Titmus have won The Examiner's Coles Junior Sports Award. They have gone on to achieve world dominance in their respective sports.
On Monday, we acknowledged not just future superstars, but volunteers, parents and coaches as well at this year's awards. It was fantastic to witness impressive young stars such as North Launceston's all-Australian Tasmanian Devil Jackson Callow and North Esk Rowing Club's national champion Rebecca Bye at the start of their careers take out the major awards. Congratulations to all the award winners, finalists and everyone who contributes to junior sport in our community.
