Premier and Tourism Minister Will Hodgman said this was the second highest growth in the country, well above the national average of 5.3 per cent.

"The data shows tourism contributed around $3.2 billion, over 10 per cent of Tasmania's gross state product, up 9.1 per cent from the previous year," Mr Hodgman said.

"Our plan to grow regional tourism is working with 67 per cent of visitors now spending at least one night outside the greater Hobart area, which is exceeding expectations.

"Visitor spending is also at record highs, reaching $2.49 billion in the year to March 2019, ahead of our scheduled target.

"It is turbo-charging the growth in our economy more broadly."

Tourism Industry Council Tasmania chief executive Luke Martin said the data puts a human face to tourism growth.

"10,000 more Tasmanians have a job today because of tourism than there were in 2013, when MONA was first opening its doors," Mr Martin said.

Mr Martin said the challenge of encouraging more Tasmanians to benefit from the state's tourism boom remained.

"Nothing frustrates me more than when I go somewhere like Cradle Mountain these days and struggle to hear an Australian accent working at some of the accommodation operators because of the seasonal fly-in labour," Mr Martin said.

"Our challenge is to provide the career pathways and cultural support to encourage and support more Tasmanians into the tourism sector."
