Councillor Andrea Dawkins is putting forward a motion to ask the state government to amend the Dog Control Act and allow greyhounds to be unleashed in designated areas.

It also asks the council to lobby the Local Government Association Tasmania to support the amendment, and for council officers to identify an appropriate piece of land to develop as a greyhound off-leash area so there is no delay if the amendment is passed.

"What I hope this motion will achieve is the next step in inclusion for greys and their owners and the next stage in their freedom," Cr Dawkins said.

She said greyhound owners paid registration fees, therefore the council would be ahead of legislative changes to allow greyhounds to be off leash in designated areas and to show the community the council was contemporary and supported animal welfare, if the motion was supported.

The motion will be discussed at Thursday's meeting at the Town Hall.

The meeting will start at 1pm.
