The group has had one of their songs nominated for Triple j’s annual Hottest 100 contest.
Guitarist and vocalist of The Sleepyheads Pat Broxton said he was surprised to see one of his bands’ songs show up when he was doing his own voting.
“It was a nice little surprise,” he said.
“Triple j were so nice to us in 2018 and we are super grateful for the support.”
The song selected, Nothings Really Changed, is a song themed on breaking up.
“But it's [the song] more about how, over time, things just become easier to deal with,” Broxton said.
The song was released in March 2018, and has been played on both Triple j Unearthed and Triple j radio.
Thousands of songs from across the world are voted on for the Hottest 100 every year.
The Sleepyheads won the Triple J Unearthed’s local band competition in 2018.
As a result the they played at Triple j’s One Night Stand festival at St Helens.
The group have played a number of gigs not only on a local level but nationally as well.
Broxton said it has been great for the band to get their name out into the music scene of Australia.
“It's been really cool,” he said.
“Getting messages and meeting people from all over the country who connect with our songs is really rewarding.
“We had some people come to our show in Adelaide who travelled 3 hours to come and see us.”
The indie punk rock group were founded in 2015, but have had some lineup changes since then.
The band’s current members are Pat Broxton on guitar and vocals, Dan Barton on guitar, William Shepard on drums and vocals and Cameron Locke on bass.
Though Broxton said for the song to make the top 100 would be incredible, he doubts it will make even the top 1000.
“Just seeing that people are actually voting for us is amazing in itself,” he said.
The Sleepyheads’ next appearance will be at Party in the Paddock February 7.
Broxton said hopefully big things are on the horizon for the band in 2019.
For the moment, however, he said they’ll be mainly focussing on creating new music and touring.
