Fred, the Dainty Tree Frog, popped its head out on Saturday morning as the bananas were being put away.
Norwood resident Linda Emery said her first thought when she saw the critter was “what are you doing here? You should be in Queensland.”
After calling biosecurity, and a local gardening radio program, she was advised to pop Fred in the freezer to put him to sleep.
Mrs Emery would have liked Fred not to come to a frosty finish, but the risk of Amphibian Chytrid Fungus Disease, which causes 100 per cent mortality in some frog species, spreading further in Tasmania was too high.
A biosecurity officer picked up the frozen frog on Monday morning.
Mrs Emery encouraged anyone who saw an unusual critter in their shopping, which “did not look like it belonged in Tasmania”, to get in touch with the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment on 03 6165 3777.
