Wax is used to make apples appear more shiny, but research has shown that more than 70 per cent of Australians prefer the idea of purchasing apples without added wax.
Coles fresh produce general manager Brad Gorman said they were “always looking for new and innovative ways to improve” their fresh produce.
“We know our customers want to eat more natural, fresh foods so we are proud to work with apple growers all over Australia to remove the waxing process and offer a more natural version of this Australian favourite,” Mr Gorman said.
Not adding wax saves apple orchards money, insofar as less labour and machine maintenance is required - not to mention the cost of the wax itself.
Apples with no added wax can be purchased at all Coles stores in Australia.
