Police have this morning confirmed that they had detected the blue 2009 Ford XR6 involved in last night's fatal near Evandale ''well in excess of the posted speed limit'' in the town a short time before the incident.
Police turned to intercept the vehicle but quickly lost sight as it travelled North on Evandale Road, Western Junction .
A short time later, approximately three kilometres north of the Evandale township police drove onto the offending vehicle crashed into another vehicle.
Police say initial investigations suggest that both vehicles were travelling north, the driver of a blue 2009 Ford XR6 has collided head on into the side of a flat tray being driven by a woman turning right into her driveway in a Nissan Navara. The 54 year old woman died at the scene.
The 25-year-old Evandale man was taken to the Launceston General Hospital, but suffered no serious injuries.
Ambulance Tasmania, Tasmania Fire Service and police attended the scene.
Northern Crash Investigation Services is investigating the crash. Evandale Road remained closed for four hours while the scene was examined.
It is expected that the road will again be closed for one to two hours this afternoon as investigations continue and police survey the scene.
Given that attempts were made to intercept the offending vehicle prior to the crash, members from Professional Standars will be overseeing the investigation.
ORIGINAL STORY
AN EVANDALE mother was killed in a two-car crash last night while turning into her driveway on the outskirts of Evandale.
Police said a man driving a blue Ford Falcon was travelling across a level crossing about one kilometre south of the Launceston Airport when he lost control and crashed into the woman’s white utility.
It is believed the female driver was coming home after dropping off one of her children at Longford.
Emergency crews arrived at the level crossing just after 8pm and found the utility flipped onto its roof.
The female driver died at the scene.
The driver of the Falcon was taken to Launceston General Hospital with leg injuries.
Evandale Road was closed in both directions for more than an hour.
Northern Inspector Darren Hopkins said he was saddened by the incident.
‘‘Literally two seconds later and she would have made it into her driveway,’’ he said.
‘‘It looks like the Falcon was travelling north and has lost control over the railway lines and collided with a woman turning into a driveway.’’
Investigations were continuing late last night.
