Brigadier Nikolic yesterday told The Examiner he was considering his options but that a number of people within the Liberal Party had been encouraging him during the past couple of years to nominate.
Brigadier Nikolic and his Launceston-born wife are based in Canberra.
He said after almost 20 army postings both in Australia and overseas, Launceston was the place they kept "coming home to".
Brigadier Nikolic said if he did decide to seek preselection, Bass was the electorate for him.
"We'd be returning to an area that both Christine and I love very much," he said.
He expressed interest in running in Bass at the 2010 federal election, but he said the timing had not been right for him and his family.
Bass is held by Labor's Geoff Lyons.
The next federal election is due before November 30, 2013.
