The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for strong gusts travelling up to 90 kilometres an hour in the North-East, Tamar Valley and Furneaux Islands areas.

Meteorologist Luke Johnson said the strongest winds are expected from Wednesday afternoon before clearing Thursday morning.

Mr Johnson said the east of Tasmania is experiencing wet, rainy conditions, with steady rainfall to continue for the rest of the week.

Although flooding is less of a concern, he said the bureau has issued a flood watch for the eastern half of the state.

"Minor or moderate flooding may develop from midday Thursday. Localised flooding is also possible in areas that receive heavier rainfall," he said.

Accompanying the rainfall will be low cloud impacting visibility on roads. He said a road weather alert has been issued and drivers should take care.

The rain and wind is expected to clear over the weekend.
