Early on, COVID-19, the Northern Prison development and "smoke and mirrors" election promises had voters fired up, with many eager to hear what Premier Peter Gutwein and Opposition Leader Rebecca White have to say.
As people made their way to the event, we wanted to know what brought them out and what they wanted to see addressed by Tasmania's next Premier.
Anne-Marie Loader, of Wesbury
What brings you here tonight?
"I am a traditional Liberal voter, I have always voted Liberal. My grandfather was a Liberal senator in the 50s, 60s. But I am appalled by the way this government does not consult with people.
"I have never lobbied, or protested ... I am 56 and I have never done anything like that in my life and I foolishly thought this government would listen to people and they haven't. I am disgusted, disappointed and I feel like my loyalty has met nothing."
Is there a particular topic or issue you want to hear the leaders debate tonight?
"The prison is one, but it's more than that. I moved to Westbury three years ago and it's more than the fact that it's just an inappropriate place to put it. It needs to go somewhere with services.
"It's also the process. This government doesn't listen. Look at Lake Malbena, the lack of transparency, jobs for rich people. They've had seven years and they haven't done anything. It pains me, but I think it's time for Labor to have a turn."
Marcus Ray, of Launceston
What brings you here tonight?
"I want to listen to the debate, to what they both have to say It's an important time for us heading forward."
Is there a particular topic or issue you want to hear the leaders debate tonight?
"I guess how we are going to go forward safely to grow the economy as much as we can, but at the same time, keep us as safe as we can. It's about finding the right balance."
What are you looking for in a leader?
"I guess someone who has a vision and is aware of how they will deliver that."
Helen Hebblethwaite, of Launceston
What brings you here tonight?
"We are both really interested to hear what the leaders of the major parties have to say."
Are there any key issues or topics you are interested in hearing about?
"I am puzzled as to why it appears that both parties are proposing or offering incentives for people to vote, that really should be part of the major budget expenditure. Like fixing schools or beds for hospitals. Surely that's how the state is run, not to get people to vote?"
What are you looking for in a leader?
"Someone who is directed, knows where they're going, has a proper vision for the state and not just wants to hold power for their own sake. They should have the good of the state at heart."
Phillip Hebblethwaite, of Launceston
What brings you here tonight?
"I would like to see more emphasis put on problems before they arise, rather than throwing money at them when the event is passed. Particularly in education and hospitals."
Emma Hamilton, of Westbury
What brings you here tonight?
"The Westbury prison. There is no need for it and it's a waste of money."
Is there a particular topic or issue you want to hear the leaders debate tonight?
"The prison, health and homelessness. The housing crisis, the Department of Justice crisis, health crisis - the whole state is in crisis."
Have you made your mind up on who you are voting for at this stage, and do you think this debate could sway that at all?
"Yes, and probably not. But I still want to see what is being said about the important issues."
What do you look for in a leader?
"Someone who is compassionate and will listen and will acutely consult with people rather than just make decision based on party donors."
