Hobart Airport chief executive Norris Carter said an economic study completed prior to the impact of COVID-19 found that international flights into Hobart could increase tourism spending by up to $120 million a year.
He said this would assist in the creation of an additional 600 direct jobs.
"Globally, tourism has been one of the industries hardest hit by the pandemic," Mr Carter said.
"While much of the sector is still in recovery, the commencement of direct flights with New Zealand will bring welcome short-term stimulus, as well as longer term confidence that conditions are improving.
"Over the past 12 months as a society we have been forced to realise just how vital connectivity with other people and places is to our economy."
The state government has underwritten flights to the state with Air New Zealand for the next two years.
Flights will operate twice a week and there is an annual capacity of up to 20,000 seats as a result of the flights.
About 20,000 New Zealanders travel to Tasmania each year through mainland ports. As a result of a travel bubble arrangement between Australia and New Zealand, travellers to and from the state do not have to go into mandated quarantine for 14 days.
