The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast snow to fall above 600 metres in the south and central areas and above 800 metres in the north-east on Saturday evening into early Sunday morning.
The extreme shift in weather comes after Hobart experienced its hottest April day on record last weekend.
The bureau's meteorologist Anna Forrest said April is a transition month, so people could expect extreme changes to temperatures.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Although snow is forecast in some elevated areas, Ms Forrest said not a lot will settle due to the warm ground.
"So snow flurries are more likely. If all the rain falls as snow, only about 20 centimetres of snow (will fall) in the west," she said.
