The George Town Council approved the development application for the subdivision at 244A Agnes Street, with 21 conditions, at its meeting on Tuesday night.
In other news:
The proposed lots vary in size, between 400 square metres and 2.1 acres, and are already zoned as general residential.
The five stage subdivision on the internal block between Agnes and Arnold streets will feature 49 blocks, with one set to host a stratum development for up to 30 villas.
The DA was recommended for approval by a council planner prior to the meeting, but five representations from the public were received questioning the subdivision.
One representation against the DA by residents nearby raised concerns on the developer's transparency and the development's drainage, affect on the neighbourhood and lack of open space.
However, due to the development not having any open space, a cash payment instead must be made to the council by the developer.
A traffic impact assessment found it would generate about 582 extra vehicle movements per day across the two existing streets, but could be managed to avoid any traffic issues.
