One week after regular skipper Tom Garwood took out the round three gong, his stand-in Pete New doubled the dose with an all-round masterclass at Ulverstone.
After inflicting a stumping, two run-outs and taking a pair of catches behind the stumps, the 25-year-old opener made a patient 52 not out to see the Blues to an eight-wicket win.
The performance couldn't have better answered Garwood's mid-week call to "make a big score and back it up in the field".
"I felt like I needed to stand up and I put it on myself during the week that I wanted to perform," New said.
"The week before Tom had quite a good game as captain, so I didn't want to have him set the tone the week before and then he go out of the side and us struggle for a leader, so I put it on myself to stand up and take over his shoes.
"There were a couple of tricky periods through the innings and I managed to get through them so that was pleasing to be there at the end and to be not out was probably the most pleasing part about it."
Coming off 155 balls, New's knock came as part of an unbeaten 70-run stand with Ramesh Sundra and featured six fours.
It was his 16th first-grade half-century and his first as captain.
"It's [captaincy] something I haven't done a lot of.
"That was my second full game as captain and last time I did it we didn't have a good result, so I wanted prove to myself at the same time that I'm capable of doing it when Tom's not available."
New will regain his skipper and opening partner for this week's home clash with Burnie.
Having batted predominantly at three for the past two seasons, the former Riverside High student has been happy to return to the top of the order this campaign.
"I like anywhere when the pace is coming on the ball early and the ball's nice and hard," he said.
"Because the field's set in an attacking way, it's going to be tricky but at the same time if you get something that you like, you feel like you can score off it because there's going to be gaps."
