Waller, Alec Smith and Nathan Philip all had two-year stints at the helm since Harris led the Knights to a premiership and a semi-final appearance in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
The 37-year-old has since developed into one of the league's most damaging batsmen and is grateful to have inherited a list he believes is well-placed for success in 2020-21.
"It's a huge honour," Harris said.
"Back in 2013-14 I was first-grade captain and then we transitioned to a few different captains over the last six years and Tom Waller has obviously got us in a really good position in the last couple of years where we've played grand finals.
"Last year was a bit of a disappointing one not being able to contest the grand final, but he's done a brilliant job and I feel like I'm taking over the team at a really good time where we're improving and we've got a lot of depth in our squad so I'm looking forward to the season."

A talented soccer player and golfer, Harris has emerged as a star of the Cricket North competition in the past two seasons.
The right-hander whacked 441 runs, including a first-grade ton against Latrobe, in the 2018-19 season and single-handedly won the second of his two career Greater Northern Raiders games with a 146-ball 173 against North Hobart.
Last season saw Harris take another step forward with 592 runs from 12 games - a record only marginally bettered by teammate Philip.
Seemingly at the peak of his powers, the Launceston College teacher is looking to help his teammates follow suit in reaching their full potential this season.

"I suppose it's sort of reinvigorated me a little bit and given me something extra to play for," he said of the captaincy.
"Over the last six years I've concentrated on working on my game and trying to make myself the best player I could possibly be for the team and I feel like my game has come a long way in six years.
"Now taking on the captaincy I feel like it's my turn to try and bring others on and lead a bit more with my actions.
"I'm looking forward to hopefully getting the best out of my teammates and showing some of the younger guys how the game should be played."
