The Launceston Christmas Parade is sure to draw people out to catch a glimpse of brightly decorated floats, along with the jolly man in red himself Santa Claus, but it also offers a great opportunity for people to get a head start (or finish) on their Christmas shopping. With the City of Launceston council planning its open streets event, extending the Brisbane Street mall along the Avenue, it's likely people will take advantage of some shopping. However, with the increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic, it's important to keep in mind the impact this will have on small businesses. Small businesses are the lifeblood of the Tasmanian economy, but they rely on regular trade to keep them open during the summer and holiday periods.
If you are out shopping this weekend - think about shopping local and have a look in one of the many great small businesses Launceston has to offer. You never know just what you might find while searching through a smaller shop. However, with the increased patronage, the increase for opportunistic thieves also arises. This year, Tasmania Police is renewing its calls for small business owners to be vigilant against shopstealing. Everyone has a role to play in stopping theft from businesses, both large and small - and everyone can be a victim of theft. From business owners who lose stock to the distracted shopper - as opportunistic thieves take advantage of busy and distracted people.
Crime Stoppers is also warning people to be more vigilant when they head to the shops and to make sure you don't leave personal belongings in changerooms or on the tops of cars, for example. While Christmas shopping can run the gauntlet for emotions (from excitement to stressful and tiring, and then back again) being vigilant will at least take some of the stress away from the potential for theft. And then everyone can focus on what Christmas and the holidays are all about - spending time with family, friends, and other loved ones. If you're going to head out and about in Launceston this weekend, take care.
