The new national competition is barely a month old, but Tasmania's 6-5 win over HC Melbourne after being down 5-1 produced exactly the very excitement that Hockey Australia wanted out of the reformed outlook of a traditional game.
The victory was also given some assistance under the new scoring rules. The Tigers scored twice in the second half after the goalscorer is allowed to add an extra goal in a one-on-one shootout from the top of the penalty area.
The final double in Hobart came from the stick of hometown hero Eddie Ockenden in the 59th - and second-last - minute of the game.
The Tasmanians had went from one goal down to one up inside a crucial minute.
HC Melbourne goaled first in the men's clash before Sam McCambridge pulled a goal back for the Tigers.
But Josh Simmonds scored the next four goals in 10 minutes including an extra to stretch the Victorians out to a four-goal lead just minutes after half-time.

The lead was maintained for another 10 minutes until McCambridge hit a second and Jeremy Hayward added another within a minute of each other to reduce the margin to two.
Ockenden scored a first just three minutes on before warming up for a huge finish.
But the momentum did not carry through for Tassie in the women's encounter.
HC Melbourne proved far too strong in a 5-2 victory.
Hannah Gravenall scored a double after seven minutes and the Melburnians went three up just after the half.
It took until the 51st minute for the Tigers to get on the board and Molly Haas's extra made it 3-2, but Tassie conceded two more goals in the final five minutes.
