Libby Dobson, as Dr Wing It, is currently doing her "clown-ternship" which involves doing 50 rounds with a fully-fledged clown doctor.
"We are all fully qualified performers, we have all down our professional training including our clown skills ... it is important to get it right because it's a vulnerable space we're going into," she said.
"The rooms are probably a little bit scary for a patient and it's great to be able to go in and give them a little bit of holiday in the hospital and add a little shimmer."
The Humour Foundation launched its 14th roadside collection on Monday, with an aim of raising $50,000.
The foundation's fundraising manager Ian Doig said the money raised helps pay for the program right throughout Tasmania.
"In the past the clown doctors have always come from Hobart, but this year for the first time we actually have a clown doctor program starting in Launceston," he said.
"The program expanding to Northern Tasmania is good in that we can have clown doctors at the LGH more. Kids that are in hospital don't have a choice, they're ill, they're sick, their parents and relations don't want to be here, but it means they get some light relief."
The appeal ends March 23.
