Tasmanian firm XSquared Architects and Victorian architects Gayer Bailey have been chosen as the design consultants for the $79.34 million project.
The design contract is worth about $4m, with the designers asked to provide a positive environmental experience for staff and remandees.
The facility will include two maximum security-rated male accommodation units with a minimum of 140 beds across the two units, a medical clinic and a recreational hall. About $70m will be spent on this stage of the project.
Risdon Prison Complex works will include an upgrade and extension of the Visitors' Centre, a new kitchen, and upgrades to the gatehouse and health centre. This is expected to cost about $9 million.
Construction is expected to start in March 2019.
The project is part of the state government’s commitment to optimising opportunities for rehabilitation and improving facilities in response to growing demand which is being felt across all Australian jurisdictions, Corrections Minister Elise Archer said.
