This editorial has previously congratulated everyone who was a finalist and winners at the event.

However, it would be remiss to not also point out the potential that was showcased at the awards.

Anyone who has conducted a job interview knows to look for past behaviour as a guide for what future behaviour would be. It’s why interviews often have questions that start with “tell us a time when” or “give us an example of”.

The Launceston Chamber of Commerce business awards paid homage to the past, acknowledged the present and looked to the future.

This was in the form of the many categories – including a new one created to recognise the efforts of a 16-year-old. Jayden Lee self-nominated for the awards for his business and creation Fast Way Fencing Tie Offs. This is proof that the future is ours to create. Launceston doesn’t have to wait for opportunities to come, we can and do create opportunities on a regular basis.

The Chamber reminded people at the event that Albert Hall was the 11th biggest building in the world once it was built. 

Therefore, innovation isn’t a new concept. We have been a daring, creative and passionate region for many, many years.

One of the greatest highlights from the awards was the focus on people. This is our strength as a region. People also make the difference between a good business and an excellent business,

The winners on stage were quick to point out staff and family support as the reason for success. That investing in staff is just as critical as investing in any other part of the business.

Without local businesses, we don’t have a local economy. 

So, let’s support these local businesses who are employing local people. Buy local and support local. Your dollar spent will be far-reaching and will contribute not only to the present, but Launceston’s future.
