The claims were posted on social media after the strawberries were purchased on Sunday, but the incident was not reported directly to police.
Detective Acting Inspector David Richardson said Tasmania Police contacted Woolworths supermarket at Rosny Park in relation to the online reports.
“Yesterday afternoon, a customer returned strawberries to the supermarket which were purchased earlier in the day, alleging they had been contaminated by a needle,” he said.
“Police attended Woolworths at Rosny Park and collected the strawberries believed to be contaminated and are conducting examinations on the products.
“As the products have yet to be forensically examined, it is unknown if the contamination is related to the ongoing incident in Queensland.”
The post has since been removed from Facebook.
The claims come after berry brands across the nation were targeted, with needles found in strawberries distributed from at least six brands.
An update on the Tasmanian investigation is expected at 2pm, with police and Public Health to address media.
Anyone who has information about contaminated strawberries should contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
