A spotlight will be thrown onto Launceston’s Cataract Gorge when tourism dignitaries from across the country converge on our regional city to name the best of the best in Australian tourism.
Launceston is a city undergoing vast change.
It’s public spaces, such as Civic Square, the Quadrant Mall and the Brisbane Street Mall have had, or are undergoing, significant face lifts.
In the past few months we have also welcomed Peppers Silo Hotel to our midst.
In addition, there are several other council developments on the agenda, and the University of Tasmania is powering through its plan to relocate its campus from Newnham to Inveresk.
Hosting the Australian Tourism Awards in 2019 will not only be a good way to celebrate the city’s renewal but also to showcase Launceston to the nation.
On Monday, the City of Launceston council will consider a proposal from the Australian Tourism Awards, which is seeking $50,000 to help stage its event.
The funds will be used to set up a marquee over the pool at the Cataract Gorge to host the event and its accompanying dinner.
At the time, the Cataract Gorge will also be have a new playground installed.
However, the works will alter the topography of the ground and it will not be flat enough for a marquee to be installed.
The Australian Tourism Awards have only been held outside a capital city twice in its history.
It will bring together significant players in the national tourism industry – and all eyes will be on Launceston.
The Cataract Gorge will make a stunning backdrop for the awards and the ripple effects of hosting the tourism awards will be far-reaching.
The awards will play host to 800 of the nation’s top tourism operators, who will see Launceston and the Cataract Gorge in all its tourism glory.
A $50,000 investment now will be a welcome boost in 2019 when the city and the Cataract Gorge is thrust onto Australia’s stage.
Launceston has a lot to offer tourists and we should be shouting it from the rooftops.
The Australian Tourism Awards will help show the world we are a destination in our own right.
