Previously Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President at La Trobe, Professor Long takes up the role in early June, replacing Professor Mike Calford.
Professor Calford announced his move to the Australian National University late last year.
Based in Launceston, Professor Long will bring a wealth of administrative and academic executive experience to the University of Tasmania.
Professor Long’s early academic career focused on historic Britain, and gender studies, moving into university leadership roles in the early 2000s.
Before La Trobe University, Professor Long taught and conducted research at the University of Western Australia, her roles including Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies, and Dean of Undergraduate Studies.
Professor Long’s appointment to the key management role as UTAS Provost follows Professor Rufus Black taking up the leading role of Vice-Chancellor.
In the role of Provost, Professor Calford was instrumental in establishing the university’s Inveresk relocation project, before announcing his departure a short time after former Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Rathjen moved to the University of Adelaide.
