We are lucky, as Australians, to live in a democracy, where your political leanings can be worn on your sleeve for all to see or can be hidden away, only to rear its head, quick as a snake, over a particularly heated water cooler conversation.
Politics in Tasmania can often lead to an “us and them” mentality. Where those who vouch for the two major political parties in the state debate over issues such as health, education and jobs.
We have seen it most recently with our state election memories just beginning to fade – the debates this year focusing on the perennial issue of health, and the more surprising one of problem gambling and pokies’ place in our pubs and clubs.
There are not many people who can straddle that divide, but Vanessa Goodwin was one such person.
Tasmania’s most recent former Attorney-General was farewelled in a state funeral on Friday, with family, friends, colleagues and the public invited to say their goodbyes. Dr Goodwin was remembered as “intelligent, composed and generous” by her family, who reiterated she was “totally dedicated to the people of Tasmania.”
A statement from the family on Friday said they had been moved by the number of calls, messages and letters they had received, which is testament to the lasting legacy Dr Goodwin will leave on the state.
“The impact of Vanessa on our community was evident throughout the service and it is clear she was held in the highest regard. Vanessa achieved so much in such a short time, and we are so proud of her,” they said.
Not only was she the Member for Pembroke, she was also the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council, and built bridges between both levels of government and her constituents.
Dr Goodwin lived her life with integrity and was an embodiment of the best that politics can offer – a ‘true local member’ as Premier Will Hodgman recalled in his eulogy on Friday.
“No matter their political persuasion, Vanessa had a great affection for them all, and managed to hold their affection and respect while fearlessly advancing the government’s agenda.”
The legacy of a person like Vanessa Goodwin will not soon be forgotten, which will mean her memory will live on as an example for others who wish to follow the political path. Vale Vanessa Goodwin.
