Owner Mondelez International announced the redundancies to its factory workforce on Tuesday.
Mondelez International area vice president Amanda Banfield said the $75 million investment would be rolled out over the next 18 months but 50 of the 450 staff at the factory would have to leave by the end of the year.
She said this was so the company could meet increasing costs associated with global competition, production, and the site’s distance from overseas markets.
Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union state secretary John Short said he was concerned that these positions would be replaced by casual labour hire and contracted positions.
“Workers are already telling me they are overworked,” he said.
“A genuine redundancy is when the work is not performed by anyone else. In this case, I am not so sure.”
