Debuting for Tasmania at just 14 years of age and for the Hurricanes a year later, Smith has plenty of cricketing experience but is only now able to fully focus on her chosen sport.
"For me personally, it will be nice to be solely able to focus my cricket this season. I don't have to fit in training around school and I won't have to be doing my final exams during the WBBL, so I'm really looking forward to it," Smith said.
"Exams normally hit during the Big Bash, right in the middle and towards the back end ... so being able to spend a lot more time with the team and a lot more time on my skills is going to be a lot better without school.
"I'm doing pre-season at the moment with Cricket Tas, which has been interesting because it's my first full one, so I'm really excited to get into it and experience my first full pre-season."
Despite her young age, Smith has packed a lot into her career so far playing 35 WBBL games, taking a total of 17 wickets at an average of 31.94 and economy of 6.9.
She took 3-21 in the Hurricanes' first finals appearance since WBBL02, claiming the prized wickets of Danni Wyatt, Grace Harris and Jess Jonassen.
The leg-spinner joins Heather Graham, Ruth Johnston, Hayley Silver-Holmes, Molly Strano and Elyse Villani as announced contracted players for WBBL08 and believes the side can build on last year's finals berth.
"Not many of us had experience playing in finals last year, and now - with what I think will be a very similar squad this year - nearly all of us do, which can only help," she said.
"Plus, we've got Jude [Coleman] as our head coach, who is obviously very experienced with WBBL success from her time with the Strikers, so I don't see why we can't push those top teams this season."
