A blue for eight seasons, the 23-year-old used the omission to motivate him for this season and it's paid off in spades.
"When you play with a club for eight years, your goal is to win premierships and feeling like you've done enough all year [but] to miss out was heartbreaking to be honest," he said.
"Going into the week was hard knowing that I was missing out on a senior grand final but I obviously got a premiership with the D-league which was very exciting.
"After the grand final, I was very proud of the seniors for winning it but I guess missing out left me a little bit hurt, which is understandable."
Despite entertaining the thought of NTFA football, Donnellan put his head down and worked his way back into the senior side.
After spending the first game of the season in the development league, Donnellan has played 17 senior games for 20 goals, putting the strong year down to a change in focus and role.
"A lot of it is listening to what [coach] Mitch [Thorp] has to say and what feedback I get after each game from the assistant coaches," he said.
"I've taken a lot on board with the areas of my game where I can improve and help the team, so I've been playing a forward role, putting a lot of pressure on and shutting down some players depending on the team.
"I just play my role, whatever Mitch wants me to do I'll do and do it to the best I can.
For me, it's team first and winning at all costs, whatever that is I'll do it for the team.

Donnellan's first senior grand final is set to be made even more special by playing against cross-town rivals North Launceston.
"Obviously playing against North, they've been a really good team across the last eight years, making each grand final, but going against North, we will have a red-hot crack, I love the rivalry .
"On the big stage we will put our best foot forward and give everything, it's going to be a good contest and a hot footy."
The senior TSL grand final gets underway at 2.30pm at UTAS Stadium.
