When Peter Murphy got the call telling him that he had won The Examiner's free fuel for a year competition his first thought was that someone was pulling his leg.
"Well, I thought it was someone playing a prank on me because, me being me, I'm the subject of a lot of pranks and mischievous activity from people that know me,'' the 7 Tasmania weatherman said.
"I had to sort of just sit back and think about who was calling me and what it was for and if anyone else knew that I was entering this competition to make fun of me."
A subscriber and avid reader for more than 20 years, Murphy said reading the paper was a favourite pastime and a daily routine for himself and his wife.
"I like the actual feel of the paper in the hand when we're having a cup of coffee or having something to eat first thing in the morning," he said. "My wife Donna likes actually physically having a paper setting doing the crossword with a pen. I just like the time you can spend just leafing through a newspaper."
Despite their shared passion for reading the paper and his wife's reminder to enter the competition, Murphy said he had no plans to share his prize.
"Yes, well she believes it's hers but as you know the card is firmly in my grasp at the moment," he joked.
"I will look forward to using it for the first time. We haven't done that yet so let's see how it operates very shortly, he said. "We love getting out and about on the weekends and finding different places to go, so it will make it a little bit easier to do that."
He said many of his friends were suspicious when he told them of his win, but the scepticism quickly turned to envy once he flashed them his new fuel card.
Murphy is one of two The Examiner subscribers to win a fuel card from entering the national Australian Community Media competition. A full list of competition winners will be published in Friday's paper.
