Determined to improve on a three-goal win over Cripps Waratah, Dan Roden's side raced out to a 10-goal buffer at the first break before the Blues switched tactics.
The margin was stripped back to seven before the Cavs adjusted, blowing the lead out to 20 before the game finished 63-46.
Roden praised shooter Melody Philpott and defender Dana Lester for "sensational" displays among a solid team effort.
"We got a really good start in the first quarter and then Kingston, they're a class act, they changed up their defence in the second and went zone, so that really stopped our fast ball movement through court," Roden said.
"We talked at half time about what we needed to do to break that zone and in the third quarter I think it opened up for us - we suddenly realised what was and wasn't working, the girls executed really well and as a result we wrestled that ascendancy back.
"We asked Mel to step up today and she took on both Bec Hyland and Issy Maskell - that's a tough contest, they're both talls and she pulled that ball in all day for four quarters."
A premiership player with the Cavs last season, Maskell performed well against her old side after missing the start of the season.
"Issy's been with us for the last four years but it was just great to see her on court," Roden said.
"She actually started back as a training partner with us hoping that there might be some opportunities to get a game and then she phoned and said Kingston had a full-time position and we said go for it.
"You want to see you best netballers in the state in your best competition, so it's great to see her out on court and I thought she did a great job today."

Cavaliers will look to back-up a 21-goal round two win over Arrows when the two sides meet again at the Silverdome on Sunday.
Roden spoke to his side post-game about the importance of backing up in the 12.30pm clash.
"I think this is where the rotating bench comes into play - that allows us to try and keep them fresh," Roden said.
"I'll be honest, we didn't back up well against Cripps last weekend so we talked about after the game that the challenge for us today is to recover well and come back tomorrow with the same brand of netball."
