St Patrick's College, Launceston Church Grammar School and Scotch Oakburn have fielded sides in either under-14, 16 or 19 competitions in recent years, doing battle with stand-alone hockey clubs.
But South Launceston Suns Hockey Club president David Hickman believes this mightn't be possible this year.
"Students have been incredibly disrupted," Hickman said.
"I know there's at least one of the private schools that won't be fielding teams in any winter sport, let alone hockey.
"So, we'd like to see the schools, if they're not going to put teams in, get the club contacts out to their students because all the clubs would say we're happy to accommodate them, even if it is just for the season."

Hockey Tasmania announced on Wednesday that junior registrations within the organisation to be free of charge with only club fees to be paid.
Alongside Hickman's South Launceston, Launceston City, Tamar Churinga and Queechy Penguins are the other sides in the Northern league.
"We just want to get them back into the sport so that they are doing something over winter and not losing touch altogether with the sport," Hickman said
"Any help we can give as a sport to help engage with those kids and anybody else who may be deprived of their winter sport, all the clubs would be very happy to engage with them and give them some competition over the next three months or whatever it's going to be."
