Selected as state captains for January's four-day tournament, the duo joined Hobart's Georgia Ferguson as the three Tasmanians picked in 25-player squads for a three-day training camp in October.

"I'm excited - I was really shocked when I saw that I was in," the 17-year-old said.

"It'll be really cool to play with people that [dominated at the championships] .. you can definitely tell that they stand out so it'll be nice to play with them instead of against them.

"I haven't been playing indoor for that long at a higher level so I'm hoping to just keep improving as I go along and keep getting in state teams."

Tasmania's under-18 girls' team entered the national championships light on experience but, as Cooper predicted pre-tournament, improved with every game.

Cooper's side finished the tournament on a high as Queechy Penguins' Isabella McRobbie found the net in the final minute of Tasmania's campaign.

"From the start of the tournament everyone was a bit shaky and nervous but then towards the end we really started to come together," Cooper said.

"By the end of the tournament we were playing some really good hockey."

October's camp will mark both Cooper and Commins' first experience of national honours, with the latter determined to progress through to the national under-21 program.

The Examiner's 2017 Junior Sports Award winner, ex-Penguin Commins scored in Tasmania's opener against New South Wales Blue, with Callum Emms, Vincent Harman, C-Jay Denman and Harris Pilbeam also hitting the scoresheet.

"Our team went alright, we didn't get the performances we wanted to get but we slowly improved over the tournament," Commins said.

"From our first game losing 4-2 to knocking Queensland out of finals by only losing by a certain amount was quite good - that was like a win for us. It was good fun and I think everyone grew from the tournament."

Commins will now turn his focus to the upcoming premier league season with DiamondBacks.

"Just to build on where I am now and improve every day is really my goal," the 18-year-old said.

"It's really good to be able to be picked - it's a tough team to get into, there's some really good players in there."
