A fire at a Hobart business has been caused by a faulty rice cooker.

About $40,000 worth of damage was caused to Sup, a business located in Wellington Walk, Tasmania Police said.
Tasmania Fire Service and police were called to the scene about 6.30pm on Monday.
A nearby business owner raised the alarm after he saw smoke coming from the premises.

Fire services gained entry to the unoccupied shop by cutting a hole in the roller door.
"An internal sprinkler system had activated and suppressed a rice cooker that was alight," police said.
"Sprinklers were insufficient to extinguish the flames, but did stop the fire from spreading."
TFS were able to extinguish the fire with a hose.
A section of Wellington Walk is expected to be closed until this morning due to the required clean up.
