Australian Bauxite Limited on Thursday announced it had a memorandum of understanding with the port authority to investigate exporting from the Queensland facility.
The investigation would consider a vacant block's suitability for bulk storage and loading large bulk carriers with annual volume of about one million tonnes from the company's Binjour project.
The company was also about to run tests for planned production of aluminium fluoride by refining its Tasmanian bauxite, chairman and former Tasmanian premier Paul Lennon told the company's annual meeting on Thursday.
"This will be very interesting in coming months as customers test our aluminium fluoride product," Mr Lennon said.
The company is looking to construct a full-scale refinery to produce aluminium fluoride.
Mr Lennon said the refinery would most likely be located at Bell Bay, subject to funding and engineering considerations.
The company was also working on ways to optimise development, extraction and marketing of high-priced refractory-abrasive grade bauxite deposit from its Penrose deposit, inland from Port Kembla in New South Wales.
