After recently combining with Launceston City in the women's GNL, the decision was made for the men's side to be pulled from the competition as well.
After a 2018 season that yielded respectable results, with Tamar finishing in eighth position with five wins and 13 losses, the historic club deemed themselves unable to field a side in the North's highest tier competition.
Tamar Churinga club president Nigel Richardson said that the lack of numbers of consistently available and ready-made GNL players forced the decision.
"Unfortunately, there weren't enough experienced players for the GNL and we've lost players due to schooling, working commitments and mainland travel." Richardson said
"Hopefully it's only a one year absence but the bigger picture now is developing the juniors within the club. We have teams within the 14s, 16s and 19s competitions as well as a decent compliment of players in the under 8s and 11s."
Players that played within Tamar's Greater Northern League side last year have been encouraged to continue playing hockey at the highest level possible and exercise their options at other clubs within the GNL.
"At the moment, we aren't too sure on numbers retained to Tamar as the season hasn't starting. If they go to another team and get selected, they'll play, but if they don't they are more than welcome back at Tamar Churinga." Richardson said.
Tamar's exit from the GNL leaves the competition with nine teams with a bye to be implemented into the roster.
