After 15 years in Silicon Valley Mike Cruse relocated to Launceston with the goal of manufacturing high-quality electronic components, such as audio systems for a Nashville company, fuel injection systems for Las Vegas taxis and sensors for air conditioning units.
Definium started in his Trevallyn basement, but outgrew that space and moved to Canning Street.
Now that space is bursting at the seams as the business continues to grow, and Mr Cruse is in talks with the University of Tasmania to co-locate at the new Inveresk campus.
"I want to get in there and influence what goes on and have what we do as part of the curriculum," he said.
"We could use more staff - we just can't keep up with demand at the moment. There are too many opportunities coming in and there is a lot of demand for us to travel now."
One of the ways Definium has been able to grow is through a partnership with the university, Tasmanian investors and government funding.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Opposition Innovation, Industry, Science and Research spokesman Senator Kim Carr visited Launceston to announce Labor's $1 billion Advanced Manufacturing Future Fund.
"The fund is just part of the measures we have available, but we want to ensure that businesses, such as [Definium], are able to draw upon a whole lot of things... to improve their opportunities," Senator Carr said.
Bass Labor MHR Ross Hart said Launceston was an obvious place for advanced manufacturing to grow.
"Launceston is Australia's first gigabit-enabled city, so being able to operate with fast internet speed is vitally important," Mr Hart said.
Mr Cruse said he would like to see Definium double in size during 2019.
"We have been able to build a manufacturing capacity here where we can build 20,000 to 30,000 devices a month and actually export."
