Gorge Sculpture
WHEN I saw the sculpture I just couldn’t but think why is it looking so sad, worried and helpless?

It doesn’t match the magnificent scenery that the Gorge provides.
Why not a sculpture with arms up, or waving I’m here.
I’m alive, a triumphaht attitude, a happy one.
That will be more in touch with the Launceston vibes I get everyday.

Basin Cottage
INTERESTING to read about the Basin Cottage (The Examiner, January 8) and that personnel from the tourist information centre would be there to help tourists.
About 10 years ago a gentleman had the bright idea of opening that cottage and finding volunteers to man it.
For six years I was such a volunteer and it was great.
We met people from all over the world and had pamphlets from all over the state, so were able to give out information.
Our coordinator also managed to get the magic “l”.
Then the cottage was closed for several months while asbestos was removed and the area was made wheelchair friendly.
This exercise cost in the range of $250,000.
We went back and continued giving out information and arranging monthly talks or walks for the public.
After leaving I heard that somebody had the bright idea of having the cottage open, but unmanned every day while still doing the events.
Since then I hear that the cottage has been closed and now the tourist bureau is going there.
What’s happened to all the volunteers who gave many hours of their time over the years for nothing?
Is this another backward step after spending so many dollars of our rates money on what was successful and were the volunteers told thanks, but no thanks, we don't want you anymore?
