Mr Douglas was the park’s train driver for more than 20 years and drove more than 120,000km through the park.
Launceston ratepayer Quentin Partis asked the council to consider the idea.
Mr Partis said social media went into “overdrive” when Mr Douglas’ death was announced.
“We had 4000 likes, 1200 comments and it went out to more than 120,000 people,” he said.
“Peter was a great ambassador for the city for tourism and the park itself.”
Mayor Albert van Zetten said agreed that Mr Douglas was a great ambassador for the city and would take the idea back to the council.
Mr Douglas died last week.
