In 2017, Gelston uploaded 11,777 photos to The Examiner’s archive.
“I’ve always worked off the math that for every 100 photos you shoot, only 10 will make it to the archive and only 1, maybe 2 will make it to print.” Gelston said.
Along with covering annual events such as, Anzac Day, The Launceston Cup, and the TSL Grand Final, two of the most memorable shoots were for events making their debut in Northern Tasmania.
“The EWS in Derby is arguably the best event I’ve ever had the privilege to cover”
The Enduro World Series event saw the town of Derby transformed as thousands of mountain bikers and fans turned the town and surrounding trail network into a three day long festival; part race and party party.
The other event that stood out for Gelston was the first Vintage and Rare Guitar expo.
“I was actually away overseas for the guitar expo, so I set up photo shoots with a couple of prominent Launceston based collectors and got to see some amazing guitars and amplifiers and hear the stories behind the instruments and the collectors themselves.”
