Energy Minister Matthew Groom has released a draft strategy that aims to maximise on Tasmania's competitive strengths in renewable energy and ensure the state is one of the lowest carbon emitters in the world.
''Tasmania is already a genuine world leader in the response to climate change,'' Mr Groom said.
''At 3.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, our per capita carbon emissions are among the lowest of any reporting jurisdiction in the developed world.
''But there is more we can do and must do in responding to this issue,'' he said.
Mr Groom warned that Tasmania would still experience the adverse impacts of climate change, but should use its natural advantages to capitalise on the future low carbon economy to deliver investment and jobs.
The draft action plan outlines the government's framework for action to deal with climate change through to 2021.
The government will hold public meetings in the North, North West and South in February and March 2016.
