BEING proactive with job seeking and enjoying your work are just some of many attributes that can make young people stand out in the employment game, according to a focus group at yesterday's Youth Network of Tasmania Youth Employment Forum.
New Town High School's Tom Bain, 15, Hobart Sacred Heart College's Zeinab Aldayar, 15, and George Town's Caitlyn Frost, 21, said the Door of Hope event was a valuable experience.
"I found today to be really good, it's good to hear from other people and realise that it's not just me who is unable to get a job," Ms Frost said.
"One of the biggest things that has come up are things like prejudice from where people might live, people aren't exposed to as many opportunities.
"I think people are seeing more of a need for work experience and realising that just because someone has gone to university and finished their higher education, doesn't mean that they're work-ready."
Tom said he had already signed up for work experience at his school next year and was considering job applications.
"We basically talked about how we can start getting into employment and what skills are important," he said.
Zeinab said her group found that relating with employers and having good communication skills were also key to seeking work.
