The reopening of Tasmania's borders will be a big boost to the Christmas Carnivals series

TasCarnivals promoter Richard Welsh this week said the news of the December 15 reopening had seen plenty of interest come his way from athletes interstate.

"We have been approached by a lot of coaches, athletes and managers since the announcement and the appetite is high for people to come down,'' he said.

"You can imagine that those in Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT will be chomping at the bit to get on a plane or the boat and just go somewhere and participate and race, and we are going to be one of the first ones that will be able to allow them to do that."

Welsh said clarity around the borders reopening was a crucial element of his planning for the series.

"We are two months out from the series starting and knowing we can bring athletes who are fully vaccinated from any part of Australia means we can solider on full steam ahead and get those domestic athletes,'' he said.

"We are like every other event around the world trying to go ahead with there being enough challenges already putting on events. This was a big hurdle and a big financial risk in booking flights for athletes from various parts of the country and that risk and uncertainty has now been removed, so this is a massive relief.

"Athletes need time as well as it is not just like going on a holiday to Tasmania as they also need to plan their training.

"They now have two months to train, so it is good timing from the government as we wouldn't wanted to have waited any longer.

He expected to be in a position by mid-November to confirm the first of the "big name" competitors for the series.

Welsh has previously said he was hopeful the series could ride the wave of momentum created by the Tokyo Olympics, potentially with the likes of Peter Bol and Rohan Browning taking part, especially with the athletics world championship and Commonwealth Games scheduled for next year.

Public Health's still-to-be released events framework, which would confirm what the requirements will be for participants and spectators, is the next step for Welsh.
